Code for Sustainable Homes and Ecohomes

The Code for Sustainable Homes is a way of measuring the sustainability performance of a new home. A star rating system is used to rate homes, with 6 stars being the highest score. Key elements of the Code, such as energy and water use, have minimum targets that must be achieved for each star level.

Ecohomes is an older assessment method for residential buildings. It follows similar principles to the Code, but has ratings of Pass, Good, Very Good and Excellent (like BREEAM). It should be used on refurbishments and some multi-residential properties where the Code is not applicable.

Why do it?

New homes must be assessed against the Code for Sustainable Homes in England. Refurbishments in England and housing in the rest of the UK can still be assessed using Ecohomes. However, Code for Sustainable Homes is now often requested by local authorities and government, so it is important to check. Even if not required in law or by the local authority, most housing developers now view the environmental assessing of housing developments as being directly linked to their marketability.

How can we help?
  • Assessments can be carried out only by licensed assessors. We are qualified to carry out both types of assessment.
  • Our practical skills and knowledge of sustainable construction allow us to provide support that can increase the environmental performance of projects while saving money.
  • We are able to lead specific workshops which focus on key sustainability issues such as energy, waste or choice of materials (also see Sustainble Strategies, Waste and Recycling).

Further Support

  • Produce a "Home User Guide" which forms part of the Code and Ecohomes.
  • Produce contractor "Prelims" to ensure that responsibilities for achieving specific assessment items are clearly defined.
  • Provide additional support on "Life Time Homes" criteria which form part of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
  • Produce renewable energy calculations and reports to assist with the analysis of low and zero carbon technologies which forms part of both assessment (also see Carbon Reduction Strategies).
