Waste and Recycling

Sustainable Construction Services were recently asked to work with envirowise, holding a roundtable discussion with industry representatives in order to look at how to design out waste. The aim of the film is to allow designers to easily access educational footage in their spare time to see how other designers are addressing waste in a positive way.

Please see the link for video footage of the discussion  http://www.envirowise.gov.uk/347135.

Nearly every aspect of construction creates waste. Site demolition, excavation, off-cuts, temporary works and packaging all produce significant volumes of waste on a construction site.

We can help you to tackle this waste by quantifying how it is being produced on a project and then finding ways to reduce it for you.

Why do it?

  • Reducing waste saves money for clients and contractors.
  • By 2012, the Government's target of a 50% reduction in construction waste sent to landfill (compared to 2008) will come into force .
  • All large projects must prepare a site waste management plan.
  • Any project attempting to achieve a high BREEAM or Code for Sustainable Homes score must also actively deal with waste. (Also see Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM)

How can we help?
  • Produce waste strategies for projects at both masterplan and individual building levels that can encompass every stage of the project's development.
  • Work with teams to make best use of materials and to identify ways to increase resource efficiency (also see Sustainability Strategies)
  • Skilled at using WRAP's Net Waste Tool.
  • Able to quantify the likely volume of waste produced on a construction project.
  • Able to quantify the likely overall recycled content of a project and identify ways to increase it.
  • Produce site waste management plans.
